Online Therapy for Highly Sensitive Adults in California, Oregon, Nevada, Alaska, Ohio, Virginia, Delaware, Vermont, and Florida

I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist who works with Highly Sensitive and other neurodivergent adults whose anxiety, burnout and stress don’t always look dramatic on the outside — but feel exhausting on the inside.

Many of the people I work with are capable, empathetic deep thinkers who are used to holding things together. They may feel like their brains just don’t match with the chaotic, stressful world around them, or the people that they spend time with.  They may feel overwhelmed with how much they give to others, unable to or unworthy of setting boundaries or taking care of themselves, and despite their best efforts they feel they can’t get things just right or completed.

Provider Identification & Licensure

Jessica Magenheimer, LMFT (Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist)

Licensed in: California, Oregon, Nevada, Ohio, Alaska, Virginia, Vermont, Delaware, Florida

Format: 100% online therapy (telehealth)
Location base: Santa Monica, California
Works with: Individual adults (18+)

Clients must be physically located in a state where I’m licensed at the time of each session.

I specialize in working with Highly Sensitive People (HSPs) and emotionally attuned adults, including some who identify as neurodivergent (such as ADHD or autism), who:

  • Feel deeply and think deeply

  • Get easily overwhelmed by emotions, environments, or relationships

  • Struggle with people-pleasing, perfectionism, and self-criticism

  • Want to feel more grounded, confident, and authentic

This is a strong fit for clients who are ready to actively work on patterns—not just talk about them.

You’re likely a strong match if:

  • You identify as a Highly Sensitive Person or resonate with that trait

  • You feel emotionally flooded or overstimulated in everyday situations

  • You’re burned out from trying to meet high expectations (your own or others’)

  • You struggle to prioritize yourself without guilt

  • You want deeper, more authentic relationships but feel stuck in patterns

  • You’re motivated to make meaningful, practical changes

Common real-life experiences I work with:

  • You replay conversations for hours, worrying you said the wrong thing

  • You feel drained after social interactions—even when they go well

  • You say yes when you mean no, then feel resentful or exhausted

  • You overanalyze decisions and struggle to trust yourself

Neurodivergence (When It’s a Fit)

Some clients I work with identify as neurodivergent (including ADHD or autism)—especially when their experience overlaps with:

  • Emotional intensity or overwhelm

  • Sensory sensitivity

  • Burnout from masking, over-functioning, or trying to “keep up”

  • Difficulty with boundaries, self-trust, or emotional regulation

I’m often a strong fit when you’re looking for support with emotional patterns, overwhelm, and day-to-day functioning.

This practice may not be the right fit if:

  • You are in active crisis or need immediate support (e.g., suicidal thoughts requiring urgent care)

  • You need higher-level care, such as inpatient treatment, intensive outpatient (IOP), or substance detox

  • You are seeking support for severe or unmanaged conditions outside my scope, such as active psychosis or mania

  • You are seeking specialized or complex neuropsychological testing beyond the scope of a therapy-based ADHD/autism assessment

  • You need court-mandated therapy, evaluations, or legal documentation

  • You are looking for therapy for children, teens, couples, or families

  • You prefer in-person therapy (this is a fully online practice)

  • You are not ready to actively engage in change work between sessions

If we’re not a fit, I can help guide you toward appropriate resources or referrals.

Therapeutic Approach & Style

My style is:

  • Warm, direct, and collaborative

  • Engaging and human (relatable, with clear boundaries)

  • Active and practical—not just reflective

I tailor therapy to you, drawing from evidence-based approaches:

  • DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy): to manage overwhelming emotions and build regulation skills in real time

  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy): to identify and shift self-critical and perfectionistic thought patterns

  • ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy): to develop a more flexible, less reactive relationship with your thoughts and feelings

  • Brainspotting: for deeper emotional processing and trauma-related work when needed

  • Somatic + mindfulness approaches: to support grounding and nervous system regulation

We focus on understanding your patterns and actively changing how you respond to them in daily life.

Credentials & Experience

  • Master’s in Clinical Psychology — Pepperdine University (2008)

  • Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (multi-state licensure)

  • 18 years of experience in providing psychotherapy

  • Intensive training in DBT

  • Feels chronically overstimulated, overextended, or burned out

  • Struggles with boundaries, people-pleasing, or self-trust

  • Values a therapist who is relatable, direct, and collaborative

  • Is ready to challenge long-standing patterns
